PLUG Power is displaying fuel cell units for forklifts and other industrial vehicles in a 13 day Hydrogen Road Tour across the United States.
The tour stopped at the Aiken plant of Bridgestone-Firestone and the Smyrna facility of Nissan North America for refuelling and demonstrations.
Fuel cell-equipped forklifts were shown off to visitors during these stops. At the Aiken plant, the GenDrive system was displayed on a class I sit-down counterbalance forklift.
According to the companies, the fuel cell can directly replace and maintain a charge longer than a battery. Charging and refuelling time is also shorter, and the cell emits only water vapour.
Bridgestone-Firestone is already converting 22 forklifts to fuel cells, replacing lead-acid batteries. The remainder of the fleet in Aiken will be converted as equipment is retired.
Nissan is also manufacturing forklifts which can use fuel cells in warehouse applications.
