OVER 150 truck drivers from NSW and Queensland will hold a stop-work action, protesting against
new fatigue management laws and increased registration and excise charges.
The drivers expressed discontent over the new laws which can make drivers lose demerit points, as well as the increase in charges. They also criticised the trucking unions for not adequately advocating their rights.
The shutdown is scheduled to start on 28 July 2008. The drivers have vowed to hold more meetings to make the shutdown nationwide.
The Queensland branch of the
Transport Workers Union says they are trying to assist the truck drivers, but they need to work with the unions. It claims stop-work meetings outside of unions would only create a self-defeating detriment.
