Truck tracking technology goes online in Victoria

4 November 2008 Print this article Comments Share this article

THE VICTORIAN government has made it compulsory for all concrete trucks and cranes to enrol in the Intelligent Access Program (IAP).

The policy requires heavy mobile cranes and concrete pump trucks to enrol in the program if they are applying for a permit for the first time. Those vehicles already under a permit will need to comply by 30 April 2009.

IAP uses satellite navigation technology to monitor the roads the vehicles are travelling on. It is used by the roads authority to check for vehicles operating on the wrong roads or at the wrong time.

The Australian Trucking Association says this program is welcome, although it warned against the “unethical” use of the technology.

There will be a six-month transition period from November 2008 to April 2009 to help operators get used to the new arrangement.
